Solid wood vs engineered wood: what actually lasts

Almost every piece of furniture sold today is described as wood. Very little of it is solid wood. The difference decides whether a piece can be repaired in twenty years or has to be thrown away — so it is worth being able to spot in a showroom, in thirty seconds, without tools.
What "engineered wood" actually means
Engineered wood is a family, not a material. Plywood is thin veneers cross-glued into sheets — genuinely strong and stable, and the best of the group. MDF is wood fibre pressed with resin into a dense, perfectly smooth board. Particleboard is chips and glue, the cheapest of the three. All of them are usually finished with a paper-thin decorative veneer or foil that mimics grain.
None of this is dishonest by itself. Engineered boards are dimensionally stable, they make wide flat panels possible, and they are the sensible choice for a fitted wardrobe back or a kitchen carcass.
How to tell them apart
- Look at the edges. Solid wood shows continuous grain that wraps from face to edge. A veneered board shows a thin banded strip where the decorative layer stops.
- Find the end grain. On a solid leg or a table end you will see pores, rays and growth rings running through the thickness. A photograph printed on foil has none of that depth.
- Check for repeats. Printed grain patterns repeat every few feet. Real grain never does.
- Lift a corner. Particleboard is deceptively heavy for how weak it is; solid hardwood is heavy and rigid.
- Look underneath. Manufacturers finish what you can see. Unfinished undersides tell the truth.
The part nobody mentions: repair
This is the whole argument. A scratch in solid hardwood is sanded out and re-oiled; the piece looks new. A scratch through a 0.6mm veneer reaches the substrate underneath, and there is nothing to sand back to. A loose joint in a solid frame is knocked apart and re-glued. A screw stripped out of particleboard has nowhere to bite a second time.
Solid wood also moves — it takes on moisture in humid months and gives it back in dry ones. That movement is not a defect, and it is not a reason to prefer engineered board. It is simply something the maker has to design around, with joints that allow the wood to breathe rather than fighting it. Done properly, you will never notice it.
Where each one belongs
Use engineered board for what it is good at: large flat panels, painted built-ins, anything hidden. Choose solid hardwood for the pieces you touch, sit in and expect to keep — seating, tables, anything with a leg or a joint carrying load.

Every TORII piece is 100% solid hardwood — American black walnut, European white oak and ash — with no veneers and no fillers anywhere in the structure. Joints are cut to fit and pinned without visible hardware, and finishes are hand-rubbed oils that settle into the grain instead of sitting on top of it, so they can be renewed at home for decades.
