Why solid wood moves — and why that's a good thing

Every board of solid hardwood is still, in a sense, alive. It takes on moisture in the monsoon and releases it in dry winters, swelling and shrinking across the grain by a few millimetres each year.
Mass-produced furniture fights this movement with screws, staples and rigid glues — and loses. Panels crack, joints creak, veneers lift. Traditional joinery works with the movement instead: a frame-and-panel door floats in its grooves, a breadboard end lets a tabletop breathe, a drawbored tenon tightens as the wood seasons.
When you run your hand along a TORRI tabletop in July and again in January, you may feel the difference. That is not a defect. That is the material keeping its word.
